Should you write a non-fiction book? (Week 33)
If you have an area of interest and expertise, why not?
It’s an idea I’ve been toying with for a while - whether or not to write another non-fiction book. I wrote a prepper book years ago, and got an orange banner on it, but Amazon took it down (and blocked it - ouch!) and I haven’t tried writing a non-fiction book since. Admittedly, most topics aren’t as controversial as prepping can be. There are a lot of other topics out there that I - or you - might like to write about.
It might be especially useful or relevant if you possess rare knowledge or your interest is in an area you’d love to write about. Perhaps you bring a unique perspective or information, and there’s extra reason to do it if books with the topic might sell well. It might be worthwhile to look into it first and see what the potential is. It’s also important to note what readers of the genre are looking for in order to keep the book ‘to market.’
I studied journalism and I feel like it gives me experience in writing just about anything. I just need to feel driven and compelled enough to want to write something different like non-fiction, compared to my usual bread and butter (flavours of romance and fantasy).
It’s a matter of having the time to do it too, if you have a regular publishing schedule for your fiction titles. It’s something I would like to do again, even if it means starting and building up another new pen name. It can be slow to do, but given the subject I want to write about (a spiritual niche), I’m thinking of giving it a go. Do you feel driven to write non-fiction too? Is it a whole different ball game to writing fiction? What would you write about - or do you - if you’re a published non-fiction writer already? Please share. :D I’d love to hear about your experiences and stories.
Author tip for the week: Do your research before writing a book. Know what your readers are looking for and expect of the genre, what tropes they love, what’s required and what does well. While you have your own unique ideas, if your book doesn’t fit what readers are looking for, it will work against you. Don’t let it.
